tool junkie

Year: 2003
Make: PT Crusier
Model: Special Edition
Engine Size: 2.4
Refrigerant Type: 143

I have been wrenching on cars and motorcycles about 35 years, but was never was interested in A/C until now. It's my daughter's first car and I'm the wrench.

I have a neighbor, HVAC guy, who's willing to help me with the basics, all he asks is that I show enough willingness by buying some of the needed tools. He is willing to loan me his company's recovery rig, if I will do the work. He also has the 143 for me to buy. Plus he has enough experience, at least that's what he said, to know that he doesn't know everything about automotive A/C. I appreciate his honesty there.

I have been to the AMA store and found the DIY starter kits and am looking for info on what else I will need .

At the AMA store I am considering purchasing the DIY Advance starter kit. With that said, is there any suggestions on anything else, tool wise, that I might need to replace the compressor on my daughter's PT Crusier?

With the Tips and procedure page that TRB has provided, along with the manual and my neighbors experience and my mechanical background, I believe that I can destroy I mean repair this car and maybe repair my wife's Oldsmobile too. I am getting to old to do this for a living but my son will be tacking over all my "junk" when I'm gone, so I want to invest in the right "stuff".

If I can not get the replacement parts, compressor, orfice tube ect. locally, I will also purchase them at the store. Because AMA is in Arizona, I like the new law by the way, is one reason to buy from AMA.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks for not boycotting us!

The DIY kits are great and if you are local we can always hook you up with service data material. Just ask and I'll print it out. The only other option you might consider is some flushing equipment. Dirty oil and debris are the worst thing for your new components.

Thanks TRB,

I wouldn't dare boycott anyone that can PO the politicians.

I'm in Tennessee, is that local enough, because I am very much interested in flushing and don't even know what "service data material" is. It doesn't make sense not to flush the system. Hopefully within the next week I want to have everything I need, information, tool and supply wise, to get the job done. I'll visit the AMA store again and search for the flushing equipment.

What I don't want to happen is to take this apart and not have what it takes to get the job done and done right. Well except for my lack of experience.

Would I be better off calling the store and ordering the DIY kit, the flushing equipment and AC components (everything that I would need) as a COMPLETE KIT?

Service material is just the information we have access to for paying for programs such as Mitchell or Alldata. You can also subscribe to this service on a per vehicle basis through this link.
