1982 MB 300D, Won't Take R134

Year: 1982
Make: Mercedes
Model: 300D
Engine Size: 5 cyl
Refrigerant Type: R134

This is my in-laws car; it's a nice vehicle in great shape. But the AC doesn't work. It was converted a few years back, by the dealer, to R134. I was at their house and they mentioned it wasn't getting cold, but they aren't interested in putting much money into fixing it. I took a look, the compressor was not turning but there was some gas in the system. Also some green dye, so at some point someone suspected a leak.

I thought we would just try an easy fix. I bought a can of R134 at the auto parts store and a charging hose. Jumped the low pressure sensor so the compressor was turning. I hooked up the can, but it would not take any 134. I didn't have my gauges with me, so I have no readings.

What might have been preventing it form accepting the charge? Is there anything simple and easy I should check or replace to maybe get it running? They are not interested in any expensive repair, but I thought if there is something inexpensive that might make it work, it would be worth trying.

Thanks.

Gotta start with gauges and readings, otherwise who knows.

Very possible the charging hose did not push the schrader valve in enough to open the system. Common with cheapie kits and hoses.

Thanks. I will bring my gauges next time I go there. But I really like the schrader valve idea. It makes perfect sense why it wouldn't take any charge.
