Upgrade from FOT to VOV

Peer81 on Tue June 22, 2010 6:17 PM User is offline

Year: 1981
Make: Chevy
Model: Corvette
Engine Size: 5.7
Refrigerant Type: R12
Country of Origin: United States

I want to recharge the airco system and read that I could change the old white orifice tube for an improved variable orifice tube (VOV). But I can't find the right part that would fit inside the system. Does somebody here know the right part number?

Greetings Peter

You'll be sorry if you use a VOV. They only do some good if you drive at slow speeds as in a mail delivery truck that goes from house to house.

Thanks, then I'll stick with the FOT, cheaper and easier to get

Seen a couple of posts recently on the VOV, thought this was ancient history, recall it was invented by the guy that developed the original FOT system as a means as saying, "I'm sorry I did this to you." Sounded great in principle, but kind of like a TXV without the capillary tube. Texas Instruments purchased the rights to it thinking their engineers could make it work, but after a couple of years, gave up.

If you are not a purist, install a V-5 compressor system with a parallel flow condenser, the latter may be difficult to find. If you are a purist, keep it stock and put a wet rag on your head.
