2003 Accord A/C barely blowing cool

ANewBeat on Mon May 10, 2010 1:39 PM User is offline

Year: 2003
Make: Honda
Model: Accord LX
Engine Size: 4cyl
Refrigerant Type: r134a
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 46
Pressure High: 85
Country of Origin: United States

OK, so my wife's A/C is blowing about 70 degrees at the center vent at idle & roughly 60 degrees while driving 45mph. I just replaced the condenser & receiver/drier after finding the desiccant bag had ruptured. I found no particles in the lines, at the evaporator connections or compressor connections. I had taken the compressor out and removed as much oil as would come out. Prior to vacuuming, I added roughly 4oz of PAG46 to the suction side of the compressor. Reconnected the hoses, vacuumed the system (it is holding vacuum) & charged with about 20oz of r134a. In the garage, at about 80f, the initial pressures were about 35 low & 105 high. I was hoping for a higher discharge pressure. After driving a few miles and checking again, the pressures were as posted above (46low & 85hi). Also, my clutch sounds like it may be laboring a bit. Could a slipping clutch cause such numbers? Any help on a possible diagnosis? Thanks in advance.

I forgot to mention the suction line only gets cool to the touch. Not cold, no condensation. Bad expansion valve? Bad clutch? Bad compressor? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My first guess would be undercharged. What are the pressures now? It could be leaking out as fast as you put it in.

If it were leaking that bad, wouldn't it not hold a vacuum? If this were the case, wouldn't it at least blow cold while charging or very shortly thereafter? The suction line never got cold.

Slipping clutch double check belt tension.

Slipping clutch poor pressures assuming it is fully/properly charged. Sounds like a poor pumping compressor to me.

Belt tension is fine. I'm not possitive the clutch is slipping. I only know the clutch makes noise when the compressor clicks on.
