compressor noise

Year: 1965
Make: Ford
Model: Mustang
Engine Size: 289
Refrigerant Type: R134
Ambient Temp: 95
Country of Origin: United States

Hi, I have a 65 Mustang with a 6 year old York compressor. Cools GREAT! However, sometimes I get a loud knocking noise from the compressor. Its like someone is hammering inside of the compressor. It can come and go over driving sessions.

I installed this system with all original equipment which was rebult except for the compressor which was brand new about 6 years ago and this noise has come and gone a few times over about the past year. I drive perhaps 2000 miles per year almost always with the AC on since this is Texas.

Does this sound like the compressor is failing? Again cooling is great with 40 ish comming from the evap. at all engine speeds even in super hot weather. I have not had to recharge in these 5 years. Is the compressor about to croak?

See if you can post the high and low presures for a start.. If it comes and goes, could be a few things.. But start with pressures and the ambient temp taking at..hope this helps.

Hi, I got the pressures. 22 on the low side and 215 on the high side. The ambient is about 80 ish. Very cold AC. Now these compressors are noisy but this one seems to be getteing extra noisy sometimes.
