A03 Denali

extramile on Fri August 14, 2009 10:21 AM User is offline

Year: 2003
Model: Denali
Refrigerant Type: 134
Country of Origin: Canada

Have a 03 Denali to look at tomorrow. Symptoms are: Cools well when driving but not at idle. He tells me the idle is really rough and doesn't cool good at idle. Without gauge numbers which I will get tomorrow here is what I am thinking. Idle control on vehicle bad making the ECM cut power to compressor or weak clutch causing it only to work when rpms are up which raises voltage. Anyone else with ideas ?????????????

External condenser restrictions (i.e. bugs and crap). Weak fan clutch. Excessive engine heat (Dex cooling system issues).

Yes if the condenser overheats, the compressor is working into a much higher than normal pressure, putting strain on the engine.

Fan clutch weak, but pressures will be needed to further diagnose the system, make sure the cooling system is full...

I worked on the Denali today. The customer got the little snowflake button mixed up. When it is on with a little line through the top and bottom of it the system is off. You kind of have to look at it closely to see the line. Anyways, when the air is on and idleing it works fine. When you shut the air off the motor "hunts" for a idle speed. As soon as you turn the air on ( put a load on the motor ) it idles fine. This must be some sort of idle control problem.

I get that button mixed up too... When it is turned on, it is really HOT and when it is off, I freeze... Go Figure...
