Year: 2001
Make: volkswagen
Model: beetle
Engine Size: 2.0 4cyl
Refrigerant Type: r-134a
have a 2001 beetle with no leaks in the system, air worked one day and then it just stopped, the system is fully charged and not leaking but the compressor is not engaging when the air is turned on, I was told by my mother's mechanic that the compressor is bad but I somehow am skeptical of it but he is sure shot that the compressor is shot. It perplexes me though since my mother said she never heard a grinding noise or anything and the compressor never showed signs of failing, also the clutch engaged for a millisecond once when I was watching it but it hasn't since any ideas would be appreciated.
If you're mechanically blessed, route a "hot" 12 volt positive to the compressor hot terminal for a few seconds to see if the compressor engages. I do recommend in your case to take it to a REAL AC shop, not a brake shop that has an AC sign, for example. They could tell if the system really is full (for that, you need compressor engaged and pressures read, or better to pull out the refrigerant, and measure it.
On a VW the fans need to work properly for the compressor to work properly.Check out tdiclub.com forums and search "fan troubleshooting". There is a guide for the electrical part of the compressor turn on requirements
check that 12v is getting to the compressor, they have a relay and fuses for the compressor, check them first before changing the compressor..Hope this helps..
