Poor Mustang A/C Performance, part II

ncprog4 on Wed July 15, 2009 11:24 AM User is offline

Year: 1994
Make: ford
Model: mustang
Engine Size: 5.0
Refrigerant Type: 134a
Ambient Temp: 110
Country of Origin: United States

This is an update from previous post.
Subject car is 1994 Mustang GT conv., 5.0, auto.
A/C wasn't performing very good, so we purged the system, pulled vacuum, recharged with factory specified 2 lb., 2oz. 134a. I don't remember exactly what the pressures were other than they were "normal".
Next day driving on highway 65mph, ambient temp. 110 deg., vent temp. about 50. In town, stop and go, 50 - 60+.
With car completely "heat soaked", checked pressures again.
Ambient temp. 110 deg.
At idle: 46 and 350psi.
1500 rpm: 35 and 450 at which point the compressor kicks out.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

Magic 8 Ball sez:

Original fan clutch still installed on car / condensor full of debris / missing seals & air dams.

You have a condensor issue. At 110f ambient, you should not see 330 psi on the high side. Spray some water on the condensor, the pressures should drop like a rock.

Car has electric fan, which does work. Condenser is clean.

1994 5.0 had a clutch fan. Aftermarket electric fans will not cut it.

Just checked "Ford Parts Online". Electric fan is factory stock.

Poor air flow as mentioned or a restriction. If anyone added oil it could cause odd pressures also.

System capacity: 33 to 35 ounces R134a.

Low side: 25 to 45 PSI

High Side: 125 to 230

Pressures listed at 80 degrees ambient. At 110 ambient you will see the high side closer to what bohica2xo mentioned, 330. 450 on the high side is not going to work so you have to figure out why you have such a high side reading.
