Crazy TXV Bulb?

72PMD on Sat July 11, 2009 7:15 PM User is offline

Year: 72
Make: Pontiac
Model: Firebird
Engine Size: 400
Refrigerant Type: r-12
Ambient Temp: 90
Pressure Low: 30-35
Pressure High: 200-225
Country of Origin: United States

System works great (30/200 42deg vent) on first drive for about 20 minutes (2000-2500 rpm). Afterwards, pressures climb to 35/225 49 deg vent when car is hot. Clamping heater hoses has no effect. Question is, when hot at 1500 idle, I got 40/225 54deg vent. Unclamped TXV capillary "pig-tail" bulb, put in ice water, got 30/200 with 43 deg vent. Seems to me that the evaporator is flooding, but I had the bulb clamped at 9 o'clock & covered with that white refrigeration semi-sticky insulation. Evap inlet & outlet are "reasonably" the same temp. They sweat, but no ice. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
