Rebuild R4 compressor

Turbo on Tue June 30, 2009 9:06 PM User is offline

Year: 1987
Make: Chevy
Model: Monte Carlo
Engine Size: 305

I have R4 compressor which is leaking from the front seal. I am going to guess it is the original compressor from 20 plus years of service. I would like to rebuild it myself. I would like to know if it is possible to do this at home. Anyone here do this? If so what special tools would be needed. Also, where would I find a rebuild kit and procedure for this compressor? Thanks for having such a great forum.

I wouldn't bother with it. See what the site sponsor gets for a new one.

Changing seals is a very limited fix when one has a damaged compressor. Think of it in terms of an engine. Would you toss on a head gasket if the pistons were slapping around in the cylinders? I personally prefer a new first and a quality remanufactured unit second with the R4.

Which brands to stay away from ? Which are recommended ? A C Delco ? Or are some of the newer , aftermarket brands better ?

God bless
