2001 Caddy Deville - need help on pressures

Squidward on Tue June 30, 2009 12:57 AM User is offlineView users profile

Year: 2001
Make: Cadillac
Model: Deville
Ambient Temp: 108
Pressure Low: 55
Pressure High: 245
Country of Origin: United States

Helping a friend troubleshoot his A/C. Pressures listed below, ambient is 108 (yup, AZ summer is finally here).

Max cool settings testing:
idle: 55/245
1500: 38/275
A/C off static pressure: 104

With driver and passenger temp settings to lowest, the passenger side vents blow cool, the driver's side blows warm. Adjusting the individual temp settings causes both sides to warm up proportionally, so we kinda ruled out a blend door issue. Condenser/rad fans were verified running.

There are no fault codes. We checked on caddy forums, and a number of members discussed similar probs with driver warm/passenger vent cold. They referred to a GM tech bulletin that said the refrigerant charge might be low enough to cause these symptoms but adequate enough to NOT give a low charge fault code.

We want to add a few ounces as recommended on the caddy forums, but wanted input from youse guys first. Those pressures looked OK to me, but what do you think?

If it is low and needs a few ounces, what pressures should we be shooting for? We couldn't find any info other than empty charge capacity.

Thanks!

I would add a couple ounces, you can bring your high side up to around 250 to 260psi at 108 degrees, but add slowly, an once or two at a time, and watch the vent temps for any sign of rising. I don't think I've ever worked in 108 degrees... so I would recover and recharge the factory amount back in, since you do have to resist the urge to keep adding more...

Thanks, Chick. We decided to try just a little bit and monitor vent temps and gauge pressures as you suggested. I'll post back with results.

108 sux, but it gets worse. Tim could tell you that! AZ can be almost insufferable in the summer!

I would normally tell you to pull codes (can be read right from the DIC) to confirm you have no actuator codes, but a warm driver cool passenger vents are almost always a telltale sign of a low refrigerant charge - but sometimes not enough to set a low refrigerant code and kick off the compressor. My '05 ran completely empty about a year and a half ago and never set a code.

Chick is right that you should recover and recharge to spec. Also you should add a few ounces of oil to make up for any loss over time.

108 in AZ is a walk in the park compared to 100 in AR... Trust me on this.
