What is this? (Rear of R4 compressor).

This is the NOS R4 compressor guts I'm working on. However one of the ports on the rear I've not been able to identify. Does anyone know what it is?

As stated, it's on the high side, and if you don't have one on the old compressor, you can use a plug made for the port. Some came with a plug or switch, other compressors were not drilled out. Most replacement compressors have the hole with a plug, and if you have a switch, you remove the plug and you transfer it over to the new one..

It's a missing part that I may need. Anyone have a picture of what this pressure sensor looks like and were can I get it. If I don't really need it, how can I plug this up. (The original one I had was cast sealed).

Chick is quick...LOL. I'm scratching my head wondering what to fabricate to plug it up. Anyway, I'm gonna be using R134a here. What Nylog type Red or Blue?

I'll post pics tomorrow, I have all the configurations on the bench, and can send you a plug if you need it. You can put a switch in the hole if you want to grab one from a junk yard, you don't need to hook it up if your car didn't use one..... But let me post the pics tomorrow.. go from there...

I use the red nylog for both R12 and R134a, I just like it better..

Your NOS compressor should have come with a switch or plug in the hole.. Never saw one come with the hole open..?? Anyway, you need an O ring, and a snap ring to hold the switch/plug in the compressor, did it come with those??

It came with all the o-rings, shaft seals and thrust washers. Missing was the high pressure relief valve, (my old one is re-usable), and what ever that thing is along with the snap ring. Junk yards are a no-go for me. So I'll get with you on that plug thingy when you post pics. As for usage, nope....my car did not use one. I just want to plug it up. Thanks Chick.....I'll stand by.

Due to the fact that this is NOS and it's been around forever, (and in addition to it being originally desiged for R-12), I'm buying the newer shaft seals and shell o-rings since it is to be converted to R134a. I won't be using the original ceramic shaft seals since I've being advised to stay away from them.

That's pretty darn good- you got your shell off- That's usually the hardest part on these reseals... Not everyone figures out how to do it..

I use an old shell- with two slots in it cut-out to fit over the rear of the compressor- then use a piece of oak to bridge the old shell- and press the shell off and on- works great...

The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......

Yeah, I got lucky twice. I have a 1981 Buick service manual which includes all service procedures on the R4 and R6. Saw what the removal tool looks like and fabbed my own out of 1/4" metal strip. Couple 6-9" long bolts and just rachet it off. Installing is the opposite. These one shot deals are fun. I now know that rebuilding R4 compressors is not hard at all.

You are converting from R12 to R134a ? Wouldn't a high pressure switch be a good idea ?
