A/C Blower not always working, Vents not always switching correctly

I know nothing of auto air conditioning and am looking for some advice before taking it in to be looked at by a professional, which I'd prefer to avoid.

Particularly during hot temperatures, my fan will sometimes not turn on immediately. Sometimes it will turn on after a few minutes, sometimes longer.
Also, when I switch vents from, for example, floor to dash, the vents will not switch completely. It'll switch off the floor vents but won't switch to the dash vents. It only seems to be a problem when switching to the dash vents. This again will usually correct itself after a few minutes or longer.

Any ideas on where I should begin troubleshooting?
