convert from r12 to r134a

Highjumper on Sat July 26, 2008 1:21 AM User is offline

Year: 1992
Make: chev
Model: silverado
Country of Origin: United States

My son has a 1992 chevy silverado pickup and would like to convert to r134a. He had a line leak but that has been repaired. Just too costly for r12.
How about the oil in the compressor? Will that have to be exchanged? I have the equipment to flush and vacuum so that should not be a problem (yes, I know you don't flush a compressor with the same flush as the condenser but maybe with oil?).
Give me a lot of info.

change the O tube and drier, flush system, empty the compressor oil and after the system is clean and dry, make sure to use a lot of shop air, then add back either
PAG 150 or BVA Auto 100 ester oil. I believe it's 8 ounces on the truck, but check the tag.. Then vacuum/charge the system following the vac.charge procedure listed on the FAQ section of the forum.. That page also has the flush procedure listed too. Be sure to add about half the oil to the compressor, the rest to the accumulator or other places in the system, you don't want the R4 compressor starting dry..
O tube should be right behind the right side parking light as the below pic shows..Hope this helps..

Chick,
On the o tube...should it be the same size that is in there now or should it be changed to a 134a compatible size?

I use the Ford blue O tube, (preference with retrofits) but they work fine with the GM black/white condenser mounted model...Hope this helps..
