I have a '96 Suburban w/ dual air. A leak at the high side fitting was repaired, evac'ed and recharged. But it would only take 1 lb. Low side was as at 110 psi, same as the high side. Replaced orifice tube which was clogged with what appears to be aluminum filings. Still will only accept 1 lb and has high low side pressure. I believe it has a HT-6 compressor. Could this be the problem. Thanks.
Is the clutch engaged?
Those filings were probably stainless steel- from an imploded compressor- that has lost nearly all its suction reeds- does the compressor turn very easily with one finger? does it have little "catches" as you rotate it? Is the compressor running with the 110 psi suction pressure? If all three things check positive, then you are in need of a new compressor..
The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......
The compressor turns fairly easy, but not with 1 finger. I did not notice any "catches". Yes the compressor did engage for short cycles(5-10 seconds) with the high pressure on the low side. The problem did not change with or without the a/c on.
