How to tell if refrigerent R12 or converted to 134A

Breand on Wed June 18, 2008 1:54 PM User is offline

Year: 1993
Make: Chrysler
Model: Town & Country minivan
Refrigerant Type: ??
Country of Origin: United States

I know the van originally had R12 refrigerent. I was last serviced with refrigerent in 2000 but the dealer it was serviced at is no longer in business. The invoice as far as I can tell doesn't say what refrigerent was put in, just the amount I believe it was 1LB. How can I tell what refrigerent is in there? If the A/C was converted?

If there is not physical evidence of a retro fitt.....special fittings or labels....why not simply locate a local shop with a refrigerant identifier and contract with them to test your system.

Yep, like iceman2555 said. I wish I had a refrigerant identifier for home use, but given that they cost over a grand, I'll settle for paying $15 to have mine tested when needed (for now ;-). That's what it cost me a year ago to have my '92 Accord tested to verify it still had pure R12.

If you find retrofit fittings it's going to contain some R-134a but you still should have it analyzed to make sure someone didn't just put in the 134 on top of existing R-12.
