Ok, I just bought this truck 138k and very nice for age/miles.
The a/c works well blows cold and consistent even in the hot humid weather.
When the a/c is engaged I hear a sound from the compressor/clutch, almost like the sound a bad water pump or idler pulley would make. When I turn the a/c off the noise stops. Its only noticeable at idle with the window open.
I would like to believe that its just the clutch/bearing, but I have a bad feeling its the compressor since I only hear the noise with the clutch engaged. I see no signs of leakage from the compressor (oily residue).
Sounds like clutch drag-- how wide is your airgap? Take belt off- spin pulley- does it rub clutch -- does it spin freely and easily??
The number one A/C diagnostic tool there is- is to know how much refrigerant is in the system- this can only be done by recovering and weighing the refrigerant!!
Just a thought.... 65% of A/C failures in my 3200 car diagnostic database (GM vehicles) are due to loss of refrigerant due to a leak......
