Did I overcharge?

Cookiebaggs on Mon June 02, 2008 1:07 PM User is offline

Year: 1997
Make: Chevy
Model: Tahoe
Engine Size: 5.7 L
Refrigerant Type: r134a
Ambient Temp: 85
Pressure Low: 33
Pressure High: 172
Country of Origin: United States

First off, thanks to you guys who contribute to this forum and answer questions (especially Chick). I searched and read many threads before I ordered my parts and went ahead with this repair. This truck is front air only.

I removed the Delphi "belly leaker" and replaced the compressor with the Sanden from ACkits. I also went ahead and replaced the accumulator, orifice tube, O-rings and added 5 oz of refrigerant oil back to the system.

Install ,went great. I pulled a deep vacuum, and recharged the system with 3 lbs of r134a per the specs that were listed on the OEM sticker on the accumulator.

After doing this, I read on here that OEM specs for a front air Tahoe should take 30-32 oz of refrigerant. Now I am wondering if I added too much by using the specs listed on the accumulator.

The numbers I listed above were the pressures at idle (750 RPM, vent was 51º).

The readings I took at 1500 RPM with the doors open were,

High: 195

Low: 22

vent temp was 44º

Well I'm glad to hear that as I charged with 48 oz (3lb), and then read here, that 36 oz is the OEM charge.

Pressures look fine. But the single unit capacity is 36 ounces. If you have 48 in the system you could very well have issues down the road or at higher ambients.

Any reason why the underhood sticker would list 3 lbs?
