Cool A/C, Noisy Compressor Clutch Pulley Bearing

tomibriggs on Wed May 07, 2008 1:34 AM User is offline

Year: 1997
Make: BMW
Model: 528i
Engine Size: 2.8
Refrigerant Type: 134
Country of Origin: United States

My a/c is cool and appears to be leak-free but my compressor is making an audible noise/rattle only when the clutch is engaged. I would like to replace the clutch assembly or just the bearing if possible but would rather not open the system. Is it possible to R&R the clutch w/o opening the system and evacuating the refrigerant?

Clutch is working fine until you engage it. Means the clutch is fine. You have a compressor on its last leg or needs some oil.

When considering your next auto A/C purchase, please consider the site that supports you:

Yeah when you hear noise only when the compressor is engaged, it's usually coming from inside the compressor. The clutch bearing spins all the time the engine is running so it will make noise all the time if it is bad. Another possibility with a serpentine belt setup, the load of the compressor tightens the belt and puts strain on another part.

Makes absolute sense...not what I was hoping to hear but totally makes sense. I will replace the compressor soon.

Thanks for the response!
