When adding dye to a system that probably has a leak is it necessary to pull a 30 minute vacuum before charging to system capacity? thanks for any replies

Not really, just do a quick pull down to get the air out. 2 minutes should be plenty enough time. If you plan on running the system for a few days checking for leaks. I would do a 30 minute pull down.

I like to add dye to any system which does not already have it. Makes it easier to detect any future leaks.

That is what I plan on doing...for future leak detection if needed. Wondering if I can use (1) can of R134a w/leak detection, is that enough dye ? Or do I need to use all 3-4 cans or just use the liquid dye ?

One R-134a + UV dye can will be plenty. Be sure to charge with the dye can upside down, if you remove it as gas the dye will just stay in the bottom of the can.
