How to Test A6 compressor Clutch ?

y2k600f4 on Tue April 15, 2008 11:42 PM User is offline

I just got everything needed to convert to R134a from ACKits and was starting to change out o-rings, accumulator etc. Before I remove my A6 compressor to drain and refill with oil I was going to try and test it out first (at least clutch portion). I get 12V at the clutch when AC is on (jumped cut off switch) and the plate next to the pulley seems to engage (no sound) so when I turn the pulley with the clutch activated the adjacent plate moves with the pulley as expected. This may be a simple question but should the other part of the clutch move also when engaged (thicker out part)? Or does the belt need to be hooked up ? I am not sure if my clutch is working properly. Thanks.

No just the outer edge of the plate moves down a little until it touches the pulley. That usually makes a clunk noise. But since the two parts turn together with the 12V applied, it seems to be working.
