how do i purge the gauges/hoses

Engine Size: v8
Refrigerant Type: r12

i need to top off the freon in my brothers car but first must purge the air out the gauges/hose and my manual says use instructions provided with the recycling machine well i dont have a recycling machine is there any way to purge the air out the hoses?

Use refrigerant of the can, or the refrigerant of the vehicle's system to purge air out of the hoses. For example, close all your valves on your gauge set. Attach to vehicle, the fitting presses down on the shrader valve; slowly loosen the fitting at the gauge end, and a little refrigerant from the system will purge out the air in a few seconds, then re-tighten the fitting. Do similar for the other hoses. In other words, if there's not refrigerant or vacuum inside a hose, then it's filled with air.
