I have a rebuilt A6 compressor for my 65 Corvette and need to drain the oil and reservice before I install it. What type of oil and how much do I need to service this system with R134a?
Need more information. Do you plan on flushing out the entire system and or a component replacement?
The compressor has a sump. There is a bolt on the side near the bottom. Your supposed to loosen the bolt and if lots of oil (And refrigerant) comes out the level is ok. If just refrigerant comes out it's low.
I assume that if it's off the car you could fill it through the hole, turn it up as if mounted and if oil runs out it's ok.
An A6 on a new, dry system typically gets 10.5 oz of oil - whether 525 mineral oil for R-12 or POE or PAG for R-134a - it's always 10.5 oz (11 oz is OK too).
My good friend with a 66 had his Vette appraised at 30K and has that much collision and comprehensive put on it, he figured a car worth that much deserves the extra few bucks to stick with R-12. I couldn't pour in PAG in an A6, hand would be shaking too much, would never hit the hole.
