TRB/Jack...just got my vette out of the AC shop

Year: 1971
Make: Chev
Model: Corvette
Engine Size: 350
Refrigerant Type: R12
Ambient Temp: 100
Pressure Low: 30

Hey guys, I just got the vette back from the shop doing the AC compressor swap. THey evacutated the system and only pulled 1.48lbs of freon out of it. We had charged it with a hair over 3lbs originally so that means it lost over 1.5lbs of freon since May. Anyway this time around, they pulled a vacuum for 30 mins, then let it sit another 20 mins and it didn't budge. They charged it with 4 cans of R12 this time and did not add any additional sealer/leak detector or anything to make up the remaining .25 lb that its short. The system ran in and was putting out 30lbs on the low side...They didn't check the high side from some reason but for now, the system is cooling down fine. The system was hitting 45* vent temps with the fan on medium speed and its about 90* ambient right now. So it seems its ok, we'll see but damn, for that front seal to leak 1.5lbs of freon, thats almost a can and a half.

I will be shipping your first compressor back tomorrow.

Any suggestions I should do from this point? Any other system checks I should do or just let it ride?

Thanks for your patience, we have had hell weather here and the shop couldn't get it in until last thursday.

I would have made sure I got a high side reading. Having both pressure readings is the number one most important bit of information along with oil and refrigerant capacities. I also would question a shop that did not even record this on their own. Every single vehicle in our shop has this information recorded during any procedure in our shop.

Yeah I asked him about the high side pressures and he said he didn't check it because he normally always goes by the low side pressure when charging a system from scratch.. ....not sure..

I thought about going and buying some gauges so I can learn to check it myself. Either way its working for now and seems to cool OK....Not a HUGE difference from the way it was before I took it in but it did seem to cool down quicker. I am gonna clean the hood back up, repaint and watch for oil seapage out of this compressor. The shop owner felt bad about me having to do redo work so he only charged me 1 hr labor at $45 and 2 cans of R12 at $30ea.

I hope this compressor holds its seal for a while, if not, I am not sure what to do then. I know some seapage is acceptable but when its losing that much freon in only 3 months, that ain't gonna cut it...

BTW what would be a good low side pressure? he told me it was at 30lb and he thought it was a little low. He says he mostly does R134 and he usually gets them in the 40-50lb range but since he filled the system by weight and everything is fresh, he was confident it was working as it should and the compressor was efficient.

OK GUYS, the eagle has flown....

you should get the compressor back early next week UPS said.

I will drive the car this weekend and see how it does...its only supposed to be in the low 90s this weekend so it should be pretty freakin cool.

Email me the tracking number if you have it. I don't recall any warranty paper work process that past couple days.

You need to have the whole system amount in there, or you may have problems circulating the oil. I know you must have faith in these guys, but not checking the high side pressures is "NOT" the way an AC tech does things, and NOT the way they fill it. (1/4 pound is a lot, not countimng what is left in the hoses) I hope you don't have problems down the road, but I have to wonder why the front seal was leaking.. They just are not doing it right, not even by the book (Shop manual) Just my opinion though...
